The global telecommunication industry has seen a rapid development in telecommunication throughout the past decade. Even though South Asia is a region that takes up over one fifth of the total world population, it accounts for only 2 per cent of world Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 2.4 per cent of the total telephone subscribers (fixed and mobile).Within the past few years consumers have adopted the usage of smart phones and similar mobile devices such as tablets. Customers are also subscribing to add on services such as wireless data through local and international providers.
However, when compared with the rest of the world, South Asia is one of the fastest growing markets despite its low telephone penetration.
The ICT industry in Sri Lanka has begun investing in the development of networks in the hopes of increasing demand and improving operational efficiency. Local and international network providers are constantly increasing the coverage and capacity to facilitate more efficient processes that exist within organizational entities and businesses.
Some of the advanced technologies generated through the ICT sector include GSM, 3G, 3.5G and HSPA (High Speed Packet Access), allowing high speed mobile broadband. Informatics was integral in introducing technologies such as 4G, which would enable the use of WiMax (worldwide interoperability for microwave access) and LTE (Long Term Evolution).
The basic types of telecommunications software are the packages designed to allow the local telephone switch to receive and send signals. The software programs help control the orderly processing of these signals each time a telephone connection is established with any end user in the subscription area.
Informatics has created products such as the AvaBill Suite that provide features such as customer care & billing, web self-care and point of sales.
